Should the legal age for smoking be raised? Sep 14 2004 Charlotte Bailey looks at the ongoing smoking debate Daily Post THE controversial smoking debate has raised its head once again. This time, it coincides with the publication last week of the results of the BBC's Healthy Britain poll which put a question mark against the legal age for smoking. According to the nationwide poll, four out of five people want the legal smoking age to be raised from 16 to 18 to deter young people from taking up the habit, and a slight majority even thought the age limit should be raised to 21. But, while 69% thought that the Government should be trying to change people's behaviour on smoking, including half of smokers questioned, 64% think that whether or not people smoke is a matter for them, with some suggesting that raising the age will have no effect whatsoever. The report, which questioned more than 1,000 adults on a range of public health issues, also raised other issues relating to children smoking. Of those questioned, 93% supported increasing and enforcing the penalties for selling tobacco to children, and two-thirds said parents who consistently allow their under-age children to smoke should ultimately face prosecution. Simon Clark, director of Forest (Freedom Organisation for the Right to Enjoy Smoking Tobacco), said the group supported "reasonable measures" that made it more difficult for people under 18 to buy tobacco, but added: "The suggestion that the age limit be raised to 21 shows how hysterical the smoking debate has become." The Government has said it is not considering lowering the age, but has not completely ruled it out. Smoking is a hot topic at the moment, as the Government plans to launch new rules this autumn governing smoking in the workplace, with many hoping this could signal a complete ban, similar to that introduced in Ireland earlier this year.
