Smoking ban 'better than drug' By Celia Hall, Medical Editor (Filed: 15/09/2004) Banning smoking in public places would save more lives than the discovery of a single, new anti-cancer drug, the head of Britain's leading cancer charity says today. Prof Alex Markham, chief executive of Cancer Research UK, says in a new policy document that a legal smoking ban would save 5,000 lives a year among smokers and another 700 among passive smokers, of whom 50 would be workers in pubs, bars and clubs. "Smoking kills 114,000 people every year in the UK and causes 90 per cent of lung cancers. We are committed to vigorous research to find the best ways to treat this disease. But second-hand smoke is also a real concern," he said. "I believe a single piece of legislation would be the most effective thing we could do to save lives when you compare it with the time and money to develop a first-class drug." Prof Markham said that Prof Sir Liam Donaldson, the chief medical officer for England, had said a ban would not have a negative impact on the economy . The charity's policy document, The Cancer Challenge: Agenda for Change, lists 10 priorities, led by the call for a national ban on smoking in workplaces and enclosed public places. CRUK also says that 1.5 per cent of the NHS budget should be spent on medical research.
